How to get a passport for a child of divorced parents?
Posted on April 20th, 2010 in Divorced | 6 Comments »
My cousin got divorced and has custody over the child. Actually, custody of the child was never challenged as the father does not seem to be bothered about the child. Now, the child needs a passport and it seems that the father’s signature is required, which he refuses to give.
Would anyone know how to proceed in this matter?

Mis-information.
You need the Child Custody Order,
If the Child Custody Order says, you have sole custody, or physicall custody, and the Order doesnt say shared responsibilities
you may get the passport without the signature.
It depends on how the order was written.
You may have to go back to court to have it re-written.
Or get angry with the clerk and have them ask the supervisor in Washington DC.
I accomplished it with out the other parents signature.
i actually went to get my passport, when i was 13 and my parents are divorced, but it really depends if the father is apart of the child’s life?
i dint think you can do anything about it, seeing as it is his child to and he has a say if the kid goes out of the country.
Both parents need to sign for a child to get a passport … Either they agree to sign or they don’t . You can’t legally do anything if the father refuses to sign .
We are in the same position the child has to be 16 or the court has to order that one parent has total and complete custody and that has to be presentend to the passport athorities……..not only that but those papers need to be carried whenever the child leaves the country. I don’t know what your situation is but we only wanted to take the kids for a 5 day cruise to Mexico.
Why does she want to take the child out of country without the father’s permission? Is she going to kidnap her son?
Usually both parents need to sign the papers for the underage child to obtain a passport.
However, in this case, if your cousin was given sole and full custody of the child, all she may need is to show them the custody agreement and they may allow her, and only her to sign the passport papers.
I cannot see them holding up a passport because a father, who’s absent, cannot or will not sign the papers…..call them and see, the custody papers should be enough.
